Microsoft Picture It, now in its fourth edition, promises professional results without a steep learning curve. The program supports a plethora of color scanners and digital cameras, and offers a step-by-step visual menu system that easily steers you through some reasonably complex design operations.
To be sure, we found a lot to like. Favorite features include Microsoft's clever method of handling object layers to combine multiple picture elements into seamless collages; and its use of text wizards to create 3D, texture fill, and line-bending effects. Touch-up wizards walk you through the job of removing scratches, wrinkles, red-eye, and blemishes. Although Picture It doesn't support third-party plug-in filters, its built-in special effects are outstanding--including fades, morphs, texturizing, and artistic auto-rendering.
The program features more than 400 prebuilt project templates, mostly family fare such as photo collages and greeting cards. However, Picture It 2000 does offer a fair number of projects geared for small-business use, such as flyers, business cards, and Web page designs.
